Improving the Scottish Linux Users Group
Where the People are
As we come up for eight years, member numbers are fairly steady at around 15-25 people a month. Not all from Glasgow even at physical meetings. And on irc, #scotlug has people from all over Scotland with special guest appearances from other countries too. The Scotlug mailing list doesn't do much, but the irc channel is quite busy and helpful, and this wiki is doing good stuff.
In Glasgow we have regular talks, fairly regular quiz nights, and a strong community, especially on the IRC channel, but the strain of having talks every month has proved stressful and not always popular.
Quite a few people have thought it might be a good idea to exploit the 'scot' in Scotlug by making the stated geography match the irc channel more than the physical meetings in Glasgow. So far #scotlug seems to have thought that is a good idea. Who knows where it may go.
Over in Edinburgh there's Edlug who are a friendly group almost the exact opposite of the Glasgow people (is that a surprise?) in the sense that the mailing list is very active and there is no irc channel. There isn't a wiki, and they are very dedicated to the social LUG scene and do less regular formal talks. Edlug has secured a room so more regular talks will be much easier, and has just started talking on #scotlug about using the scotlug wiki instead of starting an edlug wiki.
What can we do to improve the Scottish Linux Users Group?
(if you want to contribute, use colons ":" to indent, and 4 tildes (~) to sign with name and datestamp.)
- Encourage other Scottish LUGs to use the ScotLUG wiki
- like Edlug is talking about

- Pgeorg EdLug are beginning to use the Wiki, we need to contact Dundee and Aberdeen and other LUG's as well, to encourage them. Posting calendar events and talks being hosted at each LUG is probably a good way to start.
- Advertise meetings more widely within the universities
- Get the glalug people involved -- at least crosspost meetings to list and channel
- Pgeorg What is the relationship between ScotLUG and GlaLUG? I didn't know there was a GlaLUG.
- Encourage interchange between the Edinburgh and Glasgow LUGs
- Change the meeting time/date/location
- Alter the format
- Rename?
- Moot point, have a look at the Frappr page to see how widespread membership is
- Kylegordon 20:22, 10 November 2005 (GMT)
- One way I've seen this done is to have a CertificationFest, where people can turn up and sit the exam with
- appropriate encouragement/mentoring beforehand
- DanShearer 16:29, 2 March 2007 (GMT)
- I'm an LPI exam proctor and could organise this. FYI there will be an LPI exam lab at Debconf7 on June 19th. More details to follow.
