Video Cards
GeForce FX5700
Works out of the box in Ubuntu; need non-free drivers for 3D, but they're a doddle to install --Mrben 19:35, 20 May 2007 (BST)
GeForce4 Ti4200
- works out the box in Ubuntu hoary and breezy, both with the free nv X server and the non-free (universe) nvidia X server; have to hack xorg.conf to get dualhead working tho :( --Neuro 11:05, 7 November 2005 (GMT)
GeForce FX5900
- Works out of the box in Ubuntu Breezy, Dapper and Edgy and works fine with the non-free nvidia X Server.

Geforce6 6200 generic
- This card works great under Gentoo with either the nvidia drivers or the vesa drivers but will not work with NV. The dual head works great with nvidia drivers and a couple of TFT's(pmcclung 7/11/05)
GeForce6 6600GT
- same as above. Works out of the box with Debians nv driver, or the driver provided through the nvidia-source package. I compiled it with Module-Assistant a-i nvidia-kernel, and it worked first time.
Quadro FX500
- Yet another excellent runner. No hassle at all, just used module-assistant to build the module, and it worked perfectly.
Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME
- works out the box in Ubuntu, haven't tested dualhead yet --Neuro 11:05, 7 November 2005 (GMT)
ATI Radeon 9250SE
- Works with the open source Xorg "radeon" driver (3D with glitches), no dual head
ATI Radeon 9550
- Works out of the box with Fedora Core 4&5 and Mandriva 2005. Will work with Mandriva 2006 if the vesa driver is used initially, this is due to the CVS version of Xorg included in the iso's in which the ati and nv open source drivers are broken (although they are fixed in a later update, thus it would be wise to update after install).
Capture Cards
- Pinnacle Dazzle VideoCollector 2006 PCI DVB-T/Analogue TV/S-Video/Composite
DVB-T Cards
- Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T PCI DVB-T reciever
- Pinnacle Dazzle VideoCollector 2006 PCI DVB-T/Analogue TV/S-Video/Composite
IEEE1394 Cards
- I've got a generic firewire card - nothing special - but it works out of the box in Ubuntu. One thing to watch is that some distros require root privileges for iee1394 ports because some of the devices could be confidential, eg harddrives, which can make for problems with things like video capture software, eg Kino. -- Mrben 19:37, 20 May 2007 (BST)
Audio Cards
Fedora 3 ALSA 6 Channel PCI Sound Card XH7847 Supplier: Dick Smith Electronics New Zealand
USB Storage / MP3 Players
- Iomega Micro Mini Memory Drive works perfectly in CentOS 4.1 & Ubuntu Breezy
- Decktron IMP-8000 MP3 Player works perfectly in SuSE / CentOS / Ubuntu. Shows up as a regular USB drive.
- Xcent XT-100 Cheap MP3/OGG player; works as a USB drive - no problems in Ubuntu --Mrben 19:51, 20 May 2007 (BST)
- Creative Zen Muvo Older MP3 player, but it works fine as a USB drive. --Mrben 19:51, 20 May 2007 (BST)
ATA Controllers
ITE8212 based
- Cheap and reasonably cheerful. Works reasonably reliably under 2.6.13 and newer. Don't expect to get ATA133 speeds out of it though, it seems little faster than the onboard 33 controller. You can boot from it though.
Promise 20269
- Has worked for years with 2.6
- Both DVD-RW and CD-RW fail to work on it for an unknown reason, otherwise fine - bootable in theory but untested.
SATA Controllers
SCSI Controllers
Motherboards
Asus A7V8X-X
Cheap, and cheerful. Via KT400 board that works completely out of the box with Debian. Sound, network, firewire, you name it.
Asus K8N
Cheap way to get AMD 64. Networking, USB, sound and even Cooln'Quiet work fine under Ubuntu Dapper and Edgy.
GA-K8NS Ultra-939
Cheap Socket 939 Motherboard. Works out of the box with Fedora Core 4 & 5, Mandriva 2005 & 2006, and of course with some (although very little) tweaking this works fine with Gentoo.
ADSL
Conexant AccessRunner USB (ADSL1 "up to 8mbit")
These are cheap on eBay, Dynamode has one with model M-ADSL-USB-CW. It'll maintain the ADSL link even during a reboot (providing it doesn't lose USB power). Completely reliable even after several months of continuous use.
- Use the 'cxacru' USB DSL driver from 2.6.22+ (older kernels have an annoying bug triggered if the firmware isn't found).
- Website: http://accessrunner.sourceforge.net/ (out of date)
- Firmware: http://www.atlantis-land.com/firmware/1863_DriverWinMultiV099.085WAN.zip (use firmware extractor from website)
- Firmware (extracted from above): http://thttpd.lp0.eu/cxacru/cxacru-fw.bin, http://thttpd.lp0.eu/cxacru/cxacru-bp.bin
- Statstics utility: http://simon.arlott.org/sw/cxacru-info/
- Only kernels 2.6.21+ have full ADSL statistics and the ability to stop/start the ADSL link from linux.
Printers
Brother HL-2030 Mono Laser
- Device URI: file:/dev/usb/lp0 (CUPS' USB support failed to work), turns printer on from standby no problem.
- Driver: Brother HL-1250 Foomatic/hl1250 (doesn't go above 600x600 DPI)
